Overview

7 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climbing | Akika Adventure Tours

The 7 Days Rongai Route is one of the most scenic, quiet, and accessible ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the northern side near the Kenyan border, this route offers a unique wilderness experience with fewer crowds, diverse landscapes, and a steady, gradual ascent profile that significantly improves acclimatization and summit success rates. Unlike the busier southern routes, Rongai is ideal for climbers seeking a more remote and peaceful trekking environment. It is also considered one of the best routes during the rainy season, as the northern slopes receive less precipitation.

Itinerary

This 7 day itinerary is specifically designed to allow proper acclimatization, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced trekkers. The route gradually ascends through several ecological zones, including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit conditions. Trekkers will enjoy expansive views of the Kenyan plains, encounter unique vegetation, and may even spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys or antelope something rarely seen on other routes. The ascent is followed by a descent via the Marangu Route, offering climbers a chance to experience the mountain from two different sides.

Day 1: Moshi to Rongai Gate – Simba Camp

our journey begins with a scenic drive from Moshi through rural villages and coffee plantations to Rongai Gate. After registration, the trek starts on a gentle path through farmland and pine forest. As you ascend, the forest opens into moorland, where Simba Camp is located with views across the plains.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp

You continue trekking through open moorland with spectacular views of Kibo Peak. The trail is steady and gradual, allowing your body to adapt to increasing altitude while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp

This day involves a steady climb toward Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley. The scenery becomes more dramatic, and Mawenzi Peak begins to dominate the landscape. The shorter trekking distance helps support acclimatization.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A shorter but steeper hike leads to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, set beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. This is one of the most and scenic camps on the mountain. The afternoon is often used for acclimatization hikes and rest.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut

You cross the vast alpine desert known as the “Saddle,” a barren but striking landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you prepare for the summit push with an early dinner and rest.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Around midnight, you begin your summit attempt. This is the most demanding part of the climb, involving a slow ascent through loose scree to Gilman’s Point, then continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit and enjoying sunrise views, you descend to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

On the final day, you descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. After receiving your summit certificate, you are transferred back to Moshi, marking the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
