7 Days Shira Route Kilimanjaro Climbing | Akika Adventure Tours

The 7 Days Shira Route offers one of the most scenic and unique approaches to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the western side of the mountain, this route begins at a relatively high altitude on the Shira Plateau, making it ideal for trekkers who already have some experience with high-altitude hiking. This route is less crowded compared to other popular Kilimanjaro trails, providing a quieter and more immersive wilderness experience. It is well known for its stunning panoramic views, wide open landscapes, and gradual traverse across the mountain before joining the Machame route along the southern circuit. However, due to its high starting point (around 3,400–3,600 meters), proper acclimatization is crucial, and the route is best suited for experienced or well prepared climbers.

Itinerary

This 7-day itinerary is designed to take climbers through diverse ecological zones, from heath and moorland to alpine desert and arctic summit conditions. The journey combines breathtaking scenery with a strategic acclimatization profile using the “climb high, sleep low” principle to improve summit success. The route eventually merges with the Machame and Lemosho trails, allowing trekkers to experience iconic landmarks such as Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Barafu Camp before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Day 1: Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Shira Gate – Simba Camp

Your adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration. You then continue driving to Shira Gate, where the trek officially starts. The hike takes you through heath and moorland vegetation with giant heather and volcanic terrain, leading to Simba Camp for your first overnight stay.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Shira 2 Camp

You trek across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. The trail is relatively gentle, offering incredible views of Kibo Peak and surrounding landscapes. You arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where temperatures begin to drop significantly due to increased altitude.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

This is a crucial acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower (around 4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to altitude while enjoying dramatic alpine desert scenery.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

The day begins with climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a rewarding scramble that offers spectacular views. You then traverse ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, where you rest and prepare for higher altitude.

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

You continue ascending through rocky and barren terrain to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight climb.

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. This is the most demanding part of the climb, as you trek through steep scree toward Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). From the summit, you experience breathtaking sunrise views above the clouds. After celebrating your achievement, you descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

On the final day, you descend through the rainforest zone to Mweka Gate. After receiving your summit certificate, you are transferred back to Moshi, marking the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro expedition.
