9 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climbing | Akika Adventure Tours

The 9 Days Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the best and most scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This premium route approaches the mountain from the western side, offering a longer itinerary that allows for excellent acclimatization, diverse landscapes, and a higher summit success rate. Unlike shorter routes, the Lemosho Route provides a gradual ascent across the entire mountain from dense rainforest to alpine desert and finally to the arctic summit zone. Its extended duration makes it ideal for climbers who want a safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable trekking experience. One of the unique advantages of this route is its remote starting point, where trekkers may even encounter wildlife such as buffalo or elephants during the drive to the trailhead and in the lower forest zones.

Itinerary

This 9 day itinerary is carefully designed to maximize acclimatization through a steady “climb high, sleep low” approach. The route traverses the mountain from west to east, crossing the famous Shira Plateau and joining the Machame Route along the southern circuit. Trekkers will experience a wide range of ecosystems, including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacial summit zones. The longer duration allows for shorter daily hiking distances at higher altitudes, significantly increasing comfort and summit success rates.

The Lemosho Route is often recommended for those seeking:

  • A high success rate
  • Fewer crowds in the early stages
  • Exceptional scenery throughout the trek
  • A well-paced and less rushed climb

  • Day 1: Arrival – Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to Moshi town, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. In the evening, you meet your guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check to prepare for the trek.

Day 2: Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast, you drive to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. Following registration, the trek begins through lush rainforest where you may spot colobus monkeys and other wildlife. The trail leads to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp) for your first overnight on the mountain.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 2 Camp

You leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily up to Shira Ridge before crossing the vast Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp. This is a longer trekking day but essential for proper acclimatization.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

This is a key acclimatization day. You hike toward Lava Tower at high altitude before descending into the Barranco Valley. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adapt while offering dramatic views of the mountain’s volcanic landscape.

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble and one of the highlights of the trek. After reaching the top, you descend into Karanga Valley and continue to Karanga Camp for rest and acclimatization.

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

You continue your ascent through alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit. You arrive early to rest, prepare your gear, and sleep before the midnight summit attempt.

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Summit day begins around midnight. You climb steadily through the darkness toward Stella Point, reaching the crater rim at sunrise. From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest. This is the most physically demanding day of the expedition.

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate

You descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and complete park formalities. The trail can be steep and muddy but offers a beautiful final walk through lush vegetation.

    Day 9: Moshi – Departure

After a well deserved rest, you are transferred to the airport or continue with your onward travel plans, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
