This 9 day itinerary is carefully designed to maximize acclimatization through a steady “climb high, sleep low” approach.
The route traverses the mountain from west to east, crossing the famous Shira Plateau and joining the Machame Route along the
southern circuit.
Trekkers will experience a wide range of ecosystems, including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacial summit zones.
The longer duration allows for shorter daily hiking distances at higher altitudes, significantly increasing comfort and summit
success rates.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to Moshi town, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. In the evening, you meet your guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check to prepare for the trek.
After breakfast, you drive to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. Following registration, the trek begins through lush rainforest where you may spot colobus monkeys and other wildlife. The trail leads to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp) for your first overnight on the mountain.
You leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily up to Shira Ridge before crossing the vast Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp. This is a longer trekking day but essential for proper acclimatization.
This is a key acclimatization day. You hike toward Lava Tower at high altitude before descending into the Barranco Valley. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adapt while offering dramatic views of the mountain’s volcanic landscape.
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble and one of the highlights of the trek. After reaching the top, you descend into Karanga Valley and continue to Karanga Camp for rest and acclimatization.
You continue your ascent through alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit. You arrive early to rest, prepare your gear, and sleep before the midnight summit attempt.
Summit day begins around midnight. You climb steadily through the darkness toward Stella Point, reaching the crater rim at sunrise. From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest. This is the most physically demanding day of the expedition.
You descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and complete park formalities. The trail can be steep and muddy but offers a beautiful final walk through lush vegetation.
After a well deserved rest, you are transferred to the airport or continue with your onward travel plans, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania within Kilimanjaro National Park, near the town of Moshi and a short drive from Arusha. It stands as the highest free standing mountain in the world, rising dramatically from the surrounding plains and dominating the East African landscape. The mountain features a remarkable range of ecological zones, from fertile farmland at its base to dense rainforest, alpine meadows, rocky desert, and finally the icy summit zone near Uhuru Peak. This unique vertical landscape makes Kilimanjaro one of the most diverse trekking destinations on Earth. Along the lower slopes, climbers may encounter rich vegetation, small farms, and local Chagga communities who have lived in the region for generations. As the ascent continues, the environment changes dramatically, revealing dramatic ridges, volcanic formations, and breathtaking panoramic views. Mount Kilimanjaro is home to diverse wildlife, especially within the rainforest zone, where colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species are commonly seen. Higher up, the landscape becomes more extreme and silent, offering a powerful and unforgettable high-altitude experience. With its iconic presence and world-renowned trekking routes, Mount Kilimanjaro offers an unmatched adventure for climbers of all levels. With Akika Adventure Tours, every expedition is guided professionally with a strong focus on safety, acclimatisation, and a successful summit experience.
