5 Day Mount Meru Climb Climbing | Akika Adventure Tours

The 5 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Tour is one of the most popular and accessible ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” this itinerary offers a well established trail with comfortable hut accommodations, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a structured and supported climbing experience. At Akika Adventure Tours, we provide professionally guided Kilimanjaro expeditions with experienced mountain crews, high safety standards, and personalized service to ensure a successful and memorable journey to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.

Tour Description

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro, featuring dormitory style huts at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo camps. This makes it the only route that does not require camping, offering added comfort during the trek. This 5-day itinerary takes you through a variety of ecological zones — from lush rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and the arctic summit. Along the way, trekkers enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and the iconic volcanic peaks of Kilimanjaro. Although considered one of the easier routes due to its gradual slope, the shorter duration makes acclimatisation mor e challenging. For this reason, Akika Adventure Tours emphasizes proper pacing, expert guidance, and continuous support to maximize your summit success.

Itinerary

This 5 day Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary via the Marangu Route is carefully designed by Akika Adventure Tours to provide a structured, comfortable, and well supported ascent to the Roof of Africa. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu offers hut accommodations and a well-established trail, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a more organized climbing experience. Your journey begins with arrival in Moshi, where you will meet your professional mountain guide for a full briefing, equipment check, and preparation for the climb. This ensures you are fully ready for the adventure ahead with safety and acclimatisation as top priorities. The trek starts at Marangu Gate, where you enter the lush rainforest zone. As you ascend toward Mandara Hut, you will experience dense vegetation, fresh mountain air, and opportunities to see colobus monkeys and diverse bird species. The trail is peaceful and shaded, offering a gentle introduction to the mountain. On the second day, you continue through the heath and moorland zone toward Horombo Hut. The landscape opens dramatically, revealing stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the vast volcanic terrain of Kilimanjaro. Giant lobelias and unique alpine plants dominate this region, creating a surreal trekking environment. The third day takes you across the alpine desert zone toward Kibo Hut. The terrain becomes more rugged and remote as you traverse the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. This stage is crucial for acclimatisation and preparation for the summit attempt. In the early hours of the fourth day, you begin your summit push toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The climb is challenging but rewarding, culminating in an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds at the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you descend back to Horombo Hut for rest. On the final day, you descend through the moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. You are then transferred back to Moshi, marking the end of your successful Kilimanjaro expedition with Akika Adventure Tours. Throughout the entire journey, Akika Adventure Tours provides professional guiding, full logistical support, safety monitoring, meals, and accommodation to ensure a smooth and successful climb.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Preparation

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. In the evening, your guide conducts a detailed briefing covering:

  • Route overview and safety procedures
  • Equipment check
  • Final preparation for the climb

  • This ensures you are fully ready before entering Arusha National Park.

Day 2: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

The journey begins inside Arusha National Park. After registration and ranger briefing, the trek starts through open grasslands where wildlife is often visible from the trail. As you continue, the route enters dense montane rainforest. This section is especially scenic and alive with wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, colobus monkeys, and various bird species. The trail is steady but continuously ascending, leading to Miriakamba Hut, located in a peaceful forest clearing.

  • Trek duration: 4–6 hours
  • Experience: Wildlife-rich rainforest hike
  • Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

  • Day 3: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

This day involves a steeper ascent as you leave the rainforest behind and enter heath and moorland zones. The vegetation becomes thinner, revealing open landscapes and increasingly dramatic views of the crater walls. The air becomes cooler as altitude increases. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, trekkers have the option to hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for better acclimatization and panoramic views.

  • Trek duration: 3–5 hours
  • Highlight: Expanding crater views
  • Overnight: Saddle Hut
  • Day 4: Summit Day – Socialist Peak – Descent

Summit day begins around midnight. The climb is steep and challenging, following a narrow ridge via Rhino Point and Cobra Point along the crater rim. At sunrise, you reach Socialist Peak (4,566m)—the summit of Mount Meru. From here, climbers enjoy breathtaking views of the crater below and distant Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds. After celebrating the summit achievement, the descent begins immediately, returning to lower elevations. Depending on the pace, climbers either:

  • Descend fully to the park exit, or
  • Overnight at Miriakamba Hut (common option for recovery)
  • Trek duration: 10–12 hours
  • Highlight: Sunrise summit on crater rim

  • Day 5: Departure

Transfer from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport or continue with safari arrangements.

    See Map

Mount Meru is located in northern Tanzania within Arusha National Park, just a short drive from Arusha town and approximately 40 km from Mount Kilimanjaro. Rising to 4,566 meters, it is Tanzania’s second highest mountain and one of East Africa’s most scenic volcanic peaks. The mountain offers a remarkable diversity of ecological zones within a relatively short trekking distance. Climbers begin in lush montane rainforest filled with rich vegetation and wildlife, then ascend through heath and moorland zones before entering alpine desert terrain and reaching the dramatic crater rim near Socialist Peak. The lower slopes of Mount Meru are part of a protected national park ecosystem, where trekkers may encounter giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, zebras, and colobus monkeys along the trail. This makes the climb unique, as it combines a traditional mountain trekking experience with elements of a walking safari. As the ascent continues, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and volcanic, revealing steep ridges, dramatic crater walls, and sweeping views across the plains of northern Tanzania. On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen rising in the distance, creating one of the most iconic views in East Africa. Mount Meru offers a quieter and more intimate trekking experience compared to Kilimanjaro, making it ideal for acclimatization, preparation, or travelers seeking a shorter but highly rewarding mountain adventure. With professional guiding and strong safety support, it is one of Tanzania’s most memorable climbs.
