This 6 day Mount Meru trekking itinerary is carefully designed by Akika Adventure Tours to provide a well paced, and rewarding ascent to Tanzania’s second highest peak. Mount Meru offers a unique and less crowded alternative to Kilimanjaro, with spectacular scenery, diverse wildlife, and comfortable hut accommodations throughout the trek. Your journey begins with arrival in Arusha, where you will meet your professional mountain guide for a comprehensive briefing, equipment check, and final preparations. This ensures you are fully prepared for the climb, with safety and proper acclimatization as top priorities. The trek starts at Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park, where you begin your ascent through open grasslands and dense rainforest. This stage is often described as a walking safari, as you may encounter giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and a variety of birdlife along the trail. An armed ranger accompanies the group to ensure safety. You will hike steadily to Miriakamba Hut, surrounded by lush vegetation and scenic views.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your driver and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. In the evening, you will have a detailed briefing with your guide about the trek, equipment check, and preparation for the adventure.
Day 2: Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, you will drive to Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. Following registration, the trek begins through open grasslands and forest.
This section feels like a walking safari, where you may encounter wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and various bird species. An armed ranger accompanies the group for safety.
You will gradually ascend through the forest to reach Miriakamba Hut.
Day 3: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
Today’s trek takes you above the tree line into the moorland zone. The landscape becomes more dramatic with views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone.
After arriving at Saddle Hut, you may take an optional hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) for acclimatization and stunning sunset views.
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Saddle Hut
This extra day is essential for proper acclimatization. You can rest or take short hikes around the area to improve altitude adaptation.
This significantly increases summit success and allows you to enjoy the alpine environment at a relaxed pace.
Day 5: Summit Day – Socialist Peak – Miriakamba Hut
You will start your summit attempt early (around midnight). The climb is steep and challenging, but very rewarding.
At sunrise, you will reach Socialist Peak (4,566 m), where you will enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes.
After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Saddle Hut for rest, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut.
Day 6: Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Arusha
After breakfast, descend through the forest back to Momella Gate. You will receive your summit certificates before returning to Arusha.
